How did M.A BALLET assist you in preparing for vocational school?
I started dancing at a very late age of 15 years old. Because of this, I always felt like I had to work hard to catch up with my peers. I started training under Ms Mayu in the summer of 2017 when I came back to visit my family in Singapore during the school holidays. At this point, I realised I wanted to try auditioning for vocational schools, despite only starting dance 1 year before. I remember so clearly watching her demonstrate adagio at the barre for the first time and I was completely in awe. At school in the UK, I didn’t have much access to formal ballet classes so it was like a whole new world for me to start training under Ms Mayu. We continued to do private coaching every single holiday that I came back home. I think at one point before my auditions she was coaching me everyday.
Ms Mayu is not only a supportive and encouraging teacher, she is meticulous in her teaching and pushes me beyond my limits. When I started preparing for auditions for vocational schools, she was one of the only people who believed in me. She played a really big role in helping with my confidence and she supported me every step of the way. She organised my first audition video shoot as well as the photo shoot. It was so professional and she guided me through everything. I love her classes because she is very hands on and detailed in her corrections. I improved a lot during my audition preparation with her, not only technically but mentally and physically as well. Even though I was across the world from her during the auditions, I knew I had her support.
What did you appreciate the most? Could you share how this benefited your audition?
Ms Mayu’s support, encouragement, definitely meant the most. Auditioning for vocational school can be very difficult mentally. The process is not always fair or pleasant, and I don’t know how I would have gotten through it without her kindness and willingness to help. Ms Mayu was as much a mentor to me as a teacher. She taught me everything from how I should approach the auditions to how I should prepare the day before. Even on the most difficult days of training, when I was feeling low or maybe not dancing well, she always helped me to get past that roadblock and push further. Ms Mayu provided me with many tips and corrections which I wrote down and still keep till today. I’m so grateful for this as it allowed me to improve tremendously in a short amount of time. She elevated my ballet technique to a much higher level, which made me successful in a lot of my auditions.
What sets M.A BALLET apart from other ballet schools in Singapore? Why would you recommend it to those who are interested in vocational school?
I think private coaching is such a valuable training tool. It allows you to focus on your specific weaknesses and a lot can be accomplished in a really short amount of time. For me, training privately with Ms Mayu allowed me to work on things that I struggled with and the personal corrections / tips allowed me to learn and improve quickly. Ms Mayu is incredibly passionate about her teaching which makes the coaching really beneficial and I would strongly recommend her as a coach for anybody interested in advancing their skills.
Where are you now, and are you enjoying your dance journey?
Now I am training full time in Ballet and Contemporary Dance at Boston Conservatory. I honestly love it so much and I believe that it is where I am meant to be. My journey to get here was not at all conventional or easy. There was rejection and a lot of difficult times but I believe enduring in a journey like this has brought out a lot of discipline and determination. I wanted to go to a school where I knew I would be challenged and be able to grow and develop as an artist and I did not stop training and auditioning until I found that school. I’m so grateful for all my teachers, especially Ms Mayu, who has been there with me since day 1, and I am so thankful for how she has always believed in me.
